HOW TO PROTECT YOUR WI-FI ROUTER FROM UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS

WIFI router is a major device use to acquire internet requirements at present.But if someone knows your wireless password what could be the result.So it is better to adopt some more security steps which are established in the router.

Follow these steps.

• Log in to your router configuration page by typing the relevant IP address in the address bar of the web browser.It may varies from router to router.It may be included in the user manual guide.Type the username and the password correctly.Check the username and password in your router.

Examples for IP addresses : 192.168.1.1 , 192.168.0.1

We have to know about the MAC address of your devices also.Mac address is a unique address for computers,mobile phones and other devices which can access a network.

In here wireless mac address is needed.For that type 'getmac /v' in command prompt in Windows OS.Choose the wireless mac address in the list.

• WLAN filter,MAC filter are some of filters you can adopt to secure your router.

Lets check them.

WLAN filter

Although your password is known by others, by using this filter nobody can connect to the router by entering the WIFI password except for the users whose mac addresses are saved in the filter.

There are two types as Black list and White list. 

In Black list option for the mac addresses saved are not allowed to connect to your router. Mac addresses which are not saved in this filter are allowed to connect to the router.

In White list option only the saved mac addresses are allowed to connect to your router.

You can use these options according to your choice,

Try this method:

• Go to WLAN configure Menu.Next Access control 
• Select the control method (Black list/White list).
• Enter the Mac address that you want to block or allow access.(Enter the mac address in the appropriate method mentioned in the menu)
• Submit 

You can manage mac addresses as you wish.

MAC filter

This filter controls the data sharing via the router although connected to the router.This filter does not disturb to connect to the router.Although anyone can connect to the router only the saved MAC addresses can access internet or can be blocked.

This filter also has the options White list and Black list as in the WLAN filter.

Try this method:

• Go to firewall settings menu.Next to MAC filter menu.
• Enable MAC filter option
• Select the control type(Black list/White list)
• Enter the mac address that you want to handle

You can check the MAC addresses which are connected or which were connected earlier to your router in the system log menu in the router configuration page.Check it.

As well as you can check the currently connected MAC addresses also.

Now you can manage unauthorized access to your wifi router as you wish.It`s not a problem although anyone knows your wireless password.But it is necessary to change your password for the router configuration.The default password is mentioned in the router or user manual.Mostly this password may be 'admin' or 'password'.Change it properly unless your router will be in a problem as anyone log in to your router configuration by guessing one of these passwords.

If you want to reset your wifi configuration password press the 'reset' button in the router.Check this in user manual.When you reset all the settings of the router will be come to factory defaults.
